Advanced Cellular Access Techniques

Successive 3GPP releases have substantially modified and enhanced the RAN architecture, protocols and procedures, providing a variety of techniques that can be deployed to boost user throughput, increase cell capacity, reduce signaling delays, optimize mobility and improve user experience. This presentation focusses on these enhanced techniques and deployment options, including discussion on several key RAN evolution features which are the subject of 3GPP study or work items and expected to be finalized in the coming months.
Coordinated transmission from multiple sites can exploit the bandwidth availability which results from dynamic changes in network load, offering higher overall capacity in addition to improving data rates for user at the cell-edge. Multi-carrier / Carrier Aggregation techniques for both HSPA and LTE increase speed and capacity for all users, however the increasing number of options for management of these resources means that careful consideration should be given to the various deployment options available in order to achieve the desired outcome.
Understanding range-expansion via remote radio-heads, relays and small cell deployment is crucial to RAN capacity and coverage optimization in evolving UMTS and LTE networks, and the realization of this using techniques such as ‘cell virtualization’ is also presented.

Critical Communications and Public Safety in 4G-5G Networks

The evolution of mobile networks to meet the changing demands of human communications from click and wait/background traffic, to interactive, real-time, haptic communication is making them more suitable for supporting mission critical communications and Emergency Service applications.
Networks are now being designed to provide significantly reduced end-to-end latency and higher reliability than was previously possible. Ultra-reliability is vital for safety. Low latency is crucial to ensure applications are usable and interactive whether human-to-human, human-to-machine or machine-to-machine communication – all of which are relevant for services oriented towards public safety.
This course provides a technical overview of Proximity Services (ProSe) features in the EPS, including direct or EPC-level ProSe discovery and ProSe Direct Communication using E-UTRAN and WLAN direct. The need for ultra-reliability and virtual zero latency communication are presented as well as some of the solutions being developed to build 5G networks.

The Path to 5G

There is currently much discussion and many papers on the development and deployment options for 5G networks and services. Key industry bodies, vendors and service providers are broadly aligned in many areas regarding 5G service provision models and use-cases, and consequently the finer details are emerging. A common objective is that 5G should be an end-to-end system environment designed to support sustainable business models which support value creation.
Radio spectrum released by the WRC in 2015 will be further augmented in 2019 to support the huge demands that will be placed on 5G systems, and it is expected by the GSMA that 5G needs spectrum within three key frequency ranges, (Sub-1 GHz, 1-6 GHz and above 6 GHz), to deliver widespread coverage and support all use cases.
In addition to supporting the evolution of the established prominent mobile broadband services, 5G will be required to support countless emerging use cases, ranging from Internet of Things applications with very low bandwidth requirements to applications and services with very demanding requirements on data rate and latency.
This one day course introduces 5G concepts and principles based on the design goals and visions from standards organizations, regulatory bodies and leading vendors. The course presents various service provision mechanisms required to enable new and varied use-cases and verticals, (such as Cellular IoT, Mission Critical Control, e-Health, Automotive, Entertainment and Media), and details the physical and logical architecture options that are currently being specified to support these. Virtualization, dynamic resource optimization and performance management are all discussed, including Cloud RAN, Core and Edge options. The course also presents the evolution of radio techniques and waveforms, including developments in multiple access, multi-RAT, TDD and MIMO technologies.

Service Provision – Control and Charging in the Evolved Packet Core

This presentation provides a detailed description of the emerging techniques defined by 3GPP for the provision, management and charging of services using a policy controlled Evolved Packet Core network. Features have been introduced to more easily manage network capacity, differentiate subscribers and dynamically manage services, all of which can assist in protecting and optimizing valuable network resources. New Policy Control and Charging mechanisms facilitate more centralized management of QoS control, service definitions and subscriber access profiles. A comprehensive understanding of these mechanisms are essential to successfully deploy and manage profitable services in evolving wireless networks.
Conversational and streaming audio / video session management over LTE, HSPA+ and WiFi access networks has been enhanced via the optimized IMS architecture and procedures, and therefore the support of these techniques to deploy services such as standard / high-definition voice, conferencing, and streaming video will become crucial in many networks. Consequently the PCC / IMS architectures, protocols and procedures are discussed in detail, including key interactions between these platforms, in order to provide an understanding of the various deployment options.
The support of both Online and Offline Charging methods for increasingly diverse applications and services in both home and roaming environments is clearly becoming a key requirement in emerging networks. The use of Service Data Flow provisioning and management in order to dynamically authorize, control and successfully charge for multi-bearer services is another key component in evolved service provision, and these principles are also discussed in this presentation.
